Sizzling Summer Round Up: Timber Press!

Today, Timber Press is kindly hosting our Sizzling Summer Round Up give-away!

Perhaps you're familiar with some of their earlier titles such as Free Range Chicken Gardens (love that book!) and The Edible Front Yard. And then there's the titles that are going to be released soon... Keeping Bees in Towns & Cities as well as The Vegetable Gardener's Guide to Permaculture. Those sound really good!

Their recent release is a line of gardening books to help gardeners diagnose problems. (I definitely could use this kind of help!) What's Wrong with My Vegetable Garden is well organized, clutter free, and easy to index. It has four main sections (besides some appendixes)...

• An introduction which includes charts for recognizing various problems related to temperature, soil conditions, light (or lack of), and watering.

Plant Portraits which is a profile of each of the 45 vegetables listed (some are fruits) and it's needs: seasons, soil, temperature, light, and water. How to start the seeds, deal with seedlings, and other tips are included. And of course, the profile gives page numbers for cross referencing problems in the last section.

•  The Family Problem Solving Guide addresses pests and diseases of plants by family groups.  This is where it gets REALLY good. Each plant family has the symptom, diagnosis, and solution in chart form along with a photo. The solutions have a page number to reference what can be done in detail (the Organic Solution mentioned below). AND the solutions are listed in order from least dangerous to the most dangerous. (An example of a "least dangerous" solution would be to use row covers or blast with a hose.) Very helpful!

• The last section is Organic Solutions to Common Problems which has some great ideas!

Right now Timber Press is having a promotion called Garden Problem Solver: Find Your Way to Garden Success where you can ask a gardening question, see what others are asking, hear what the experts are saying, and enter for even MORE prizes - a weekly book drawing and a grand prize drawing... an iPad! You really should check it out and enter.
